There wero numerous scratch'iugs in the Maiden Hack Race, but a field of fourteen lined up at the barrier. At the start Pall Jlall, on the outside, was quickest to begin, and at the end of a furlong she was showing the way to Carillon; the latter had the Martian filly at the quarter-mile, but he stumbled badly, and the latter, finishing on well under the stick, was only beaten by a narrow margin. Client (Elevation— Bonheur) was next and Rockabye was fourth. There were only four starters in the March Handicap. Chakwana and Goldstream were evenly fancied. At the start Goldstream jumped out clear, and, leading the whole way, won easily. Chakwana slipped about a lot and the other pair made a very poor showing on the greasy turf. Prince Laddo was the only withdrawal from the mile Hack Eace. At the barrier Ulysses and Boon played up, and the former fell back and hurt his rider (S. Bishop), and E. Manson was substituted. Doon refused to face the harried, and galloped the wrong way when the tapes were skied. At the end of a furlong Otter was showing clear from Martyress, Merrier Gain, and Sylvandale. Turning into the straight Martyress had taken charge, and here Merrie Gain trod on Otter's heels, and was knocked back. Martyress easily held her own in the run home, and won by several lengths.
