HAMBURG JOURNAL'S ADMISSION

The "New York Times" on February 10 made another powerful appeal to the German people to end the war. Taking as its text the recent admission of the "Hamburger Nachrichten,'.' that' "our people are struggling and offering sacrifices for the Emperor and Empire," and that all that theso sacrifices have gained are "calumnies' and hatred and bitter hostility everywhere." the "New York Times" aays that this is a romarkable utterance for a German newspaper of the high standing of the "Hamburger Nachrichtcn," and it plainly shows that the Geimaus are no longer victims to the delusion that the world outside the circle of belligerent nations is with them. The German people are fighting, suffering, and dying for the Emperor and the Empire, but not for themselves. They would bo happier, freer, and in every way better off without the Emperor. They would have real self-government, which now is denied them. Is it possible, "Times" asks, that such an idea is beginning to take root in their minds?
