ENGLISH RACING IN WAR TIME
CONTINUANCE DEBATED (Rec. March 17, B.'lo p.m.) ' London, March 16. The English Jockey Club, at its' meeting, decided that racing shall continue, but without social functions, at Epsom and Ascot. The Duke of Portland wrote la: letter suggesting the suspension of "the larger meetings in order not to distract the energies of the nation from tlio-supreine object. ~~ Captain Greer, who ■presided,'' said that an indefinite stoppage would bankrupt' tile breeders of bloodstock and throw idle many thousands of employees. Lord Villiers' announced that the Royal enclosure at Ascot would be closed and that no special traijis would bo run. Tho King did not intend to bo present. Lord Rosebery asked the Club not to identify itself with people who wanted fog and gloom to rest ; over the countiy and walk with their heads down because tho nation was engaged in a gigantic war on behalf of liberty. ' The resolution, to continue tho racing was carried with one dissentient.
