| A seven-roomed 'house at Lansdowne, occupied by Mr. Harry Evans and his family, and owned by Mr. J. C. Ewingtffn, was. destroyed by fire at an early hour on Tuesday morning. The occupants had barely time to effect their escape, and nothing could be saved. Tlio building, which was very old, burnt like matchwood. The house was insured in the State Office, but for what amount has not transpired. . At the - meeting of the local lodge of Oddfellows on Monday night, it was announced that the Manchester Unity of England had decided to advance.the benefits to any member of the Order who may bo sick or wounded in the war. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation of t'he action of the Manchester Unity. A fungus has attacked the roots of tho utewai, or "biddi-biddi," in this district, and is rapidly killing off the pest. A sample of tho fungus has been forwarded to tho Government chemist. Tho Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a young bird race from Blenheim. The event was won by Mr. J. B. Sutherland's' Bright Eyes in 3hr. llinin.
