Nom-' v inations are to close towards the end c of next month, and the election will I be held early in May. Mr. De Castro, £ Chief Clerk to the Education Depart- a rnent, has been appointed returning. of- e ficer for .the purposes of . the election. The new council which is to sit annually .in June (and at such other times as the Minister may direct), will consist of seventeen members, of which number . ten are to be elected. The other seven, who will be appointed, will be tho Director of Education (chairman); the., assist- f ant-Director 'of Education, an -inspector ] of the Education Department; oho mem- ( ber of the University of -New Zealand, 1 appointed by the Senate, and three s mumbers appointed by the Minister, ( two to represent; industrial and techni- -j cal interests (one of whom shall repro- ] sent agriculture) and one (a woman) to ( represent the interests of the education' j of girls. ' , The members to be elected are as fol- ] low:— < . Two members-each by'the Education , Boards of the North and South Islands. . One member each to be olected by the . cortificated male teachers, of the North 3 and . South Islands. ■ '■' i One member elected by the ' male tethers in secondary and ' technical j schools. i One member each to be elected by ] the certificated women teachers of the North and South Islands. One member to be elected by the women teachers of secondary and technical schools.' Members of the. council are to be paid travelling expenses and such sums for attendance at meetings as may. be prescribed. There is also provision in the Act for the setting up .of district advisory committees to consist of five or more members, all of whom, are to be appointed. The constitution of the advisory committees will be as follows: — (a) The Director of Education (or other \ Departmental officer).; (b) a member of the Education Board; (c) the senior inspector of the district ; (dj a member of the general council appointed by the Minister to represent the teachers of public schools of the island in which ; the district is situated, and (e) one or more persons appointed by the Minister, namely a representative of an urban school'district, or a representative of teachers or boards' of secondary and technical schools, or a representative of, a University college or other person.
