WAR DISTRESS
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), the Rev. W. A. Evans, and Messrs. J. Jack, AV. A. (irenfell, and H. Mostyn were present at a meeting of the Mayor's War Distress Committee held in the Mayor's room yesterday morning. The committee reviewed the situation generally as it exists to-day, and the conclusion arrived'at was that the conditions were changed very little indeed from what they 1 , were three months ago.. One source of steady demand upon the funds -was the. wives and families of Army reservists, who had not been able to suitably or 'adequately .provide for their wives before leaving to take up arms. - There were cases of indisposition among the wives, which were receiving inquiry and .attention from the ladies of the Lady Liverpool's Fund Committee, a moving spirit in which body is the Mayoress (Mrs.; Luke), and for such purposes this committee is being affiliated with the War Distress Committee. Not only were these ladies inquiring into the need of these people, but are taking an interest in tfieir welfare generally. The money which had been subscribed was being disbursed with the greatest benefit to those concerned, whilst in 'every way the Fund is being oonserved. As the subscriptions to this particular fund have not been coming m, owing chiefly to the number of other appeals that are being made, the sum is dwindling, and the Mayor would be glad to receive, and acknowledge any donations to this very deserving object.
