EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

.— — THE COMING ELECTIONS. ' Now that Mr, Wm. Organ has definitely decided not to re-contest the Eastbourne Mayoralty, those interested in tho good government of the! borough aro casting round them for a suitablo candidate for the office. So far,,threo names have been mentioned as possible candidates. These are Messrs. H. W. Shortt (an ex-Mayor), Wm. Perry, and Wm. .Hobbs. and at least one sitting councillor has been sounded on tho point without result. . There are several who would like to "have a flut-' tor," but who cannot spare the time away from business to attond to their Mayoral duties as they, should be attended to. ' When approached'. yesterday,: Mr. Shortt gave no indication-that he was likely to he a candidate', but manifested at the same time a lively interest in the position that could be interpreted to indicate that he might be induced to take the reins-once more. Mr. Hobbs does not feel inclined to accept nomination owing to the unsettled state of things, and deprecates Mr. Organ's decision not to stand again. There is likely to be a radical change in the personnel of the Borough Council if those councillors who have stated their intention not to become candidates again are in earnest. These are said to include Councillors S. Ross, R, L. Button', S. Harcourt, H. W. Preston, and H. .Foley.; • It is hoped that arrangements will be completed this week to take the poll in connection with the proposed highpressure' water system on election day (April 28). The system, which is the one reported on by Mr. Mestayer, consists of bringing the. water over the hill from the Gollan's Valley Stream, and reticrtlating the whole of the borough is estimated to cost between £8000 and £9000.
