Addressing a meeting of the Master , Bakers' Association, Mr. D. R. Hall (State Attorney-General); outlined a ~ scheme for the nationalising of the bread industry. He challenged the bak- £ ers to contradict his statement that . by spending half a million thfe Govern- \ ment could deliver bread at private houses a penny per loaf cheaper than the bakers. . Mr. Hall proposes to economise by ' buying iiour in large quantities, eliruhthe cost of running hundreds of bakehouses, spending nogmoney.m adi vertising, or carters' • bonuses, sending ' one cart up a street-instead_of twenty 3 (ah estimated saving of £150,000 per annum in delivering bread charges ) alone). There would, he said, be no had dobts: The State, by selling books of coupons exchangeable for loaves at a reduction of one penny per loaf, would save the people £25,000 weekly and leave a large profit, < ; Mr. Hall proposes to acquire from : thirty-five to forty bakeries, compensate the.owners, and appoint'an expert t board to consider offers. Mr. .Hall, res marked to the master bakers that in s the future they must be prepared to embark £25,000. Already companies had been formed throughout New Zealand in the ordinary course of industrial evolution, without Government intervention. ' Within ten years bread mer opolies had been established in all large u centres as profitable as the Colonial I, Sugar Company, and the Government e proposed to forestall such trusts in tho _ public interests. '
