MAGISTRATE'S COURT
STOLEN SUPPERS THREE SEAMEN CHARGED Three seamon,'-Erick Eckawall, Brynonalph Kilpiner, and Arthur Sands, appeared before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning, each charged with the theft of a meal, valued at Ib. 6d., from Annie Barker's restaurant, and, further, with obtaining credit by means of fraud to the amount of Is. 6d. The evidence showed that the trio ate . hearty Buppers, but when the time for paying came Barker found that the men would not pay. She informed the police, and when arrested each blamed the other for having invited him into the restaurant. "There's too much of this sort of thing going on in the oity," remarked ■ Inspector Hendrey; in placing the facts before the Magistrate; l 1 'the action of these men in defrauding a poor, struggling restauranteur is a contemptible, low, mea thing." The Inspeotor twided that if the Magistrate convicted the men on the firßt charge he would withdraw the second ■ charge, on which they would have had to be dealt with by the Supreme Court. As it appeared from the evidence that' Kilpiner and Eckawall had been invited ra by Sands, they were eaoh discharged. Sands was fined 20s.,'.and ordered to pay for the three meals. "A PUBLIC PEST." "This man is a pest to the community* said Inspector Hendrey, referring to Wm. Hy. Mitchell, charged'with the theft of an overcoat and an umbrella, valued at £4 45.. from Francis Wm. Tir- I rant, _aud_ with being idle and disorder- ' i w , msu fficient means of support. Accused was sent to gaol for a month on the first charge, and three months on the second. The sentences to be cumulative. SEQUEL TO A» BRAWL. As the result of a brawl in Victoria Streot on Friday, three men Martin *>?■£ ',j ,' E, - van ' an <* Thomas M Donald, the last-named a trooper, were charged with using threatening behaviour. ;The evidenco showed that the two civilians had attacked the trooper while _ Ryan was evidently going io use an open knife in his hand when he was prevented from doing so h.V a bystander. The Magistrate said hp wolild convict M'Donald, and hand him over to the military authorities. He would fine Hughes 10e.» or fortyeight hours' imprisonment, and Ryan, who had evidently been the ringleader, £2, or, seven days' imprisonment.
OTHER CASES.
Arthur Cheal was remanded until Tuesday on a charge of stealing 13s. Hd. from Mary W. Orcliison. In applying for tlio Temand, Chief-Detective Ho rid a m said there would probably be pthor charges brought against accused, involving a sum of £12. Bail was fixed at £25. For drunkenness, May Houston, an old offender, was sent to prison for a month, and AVm. Sharpo similarly was fined 10s. or forty-eight hours' imprisonment..
