THE TURF

NAPIER PARK MEETING

EEWI POTO .WINS THE CUP, (From Our Bpecial Oorreepondente.) '

Napier, March 12. The Napier Park Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, opened to-day, in showery weather. A total.of .614,151 was put through the totalisator, against -£16,080 on the first day of the. Auituinn Meeting last year.

Sir Donald stripped well in the Hurdles and so did Chatmos, who generally runs well on ithe first day of a meeting. At the rise of the barrier the quartet moved off to a good start, and Chatmoe raced over the first fence in front. At the stand the favourite had jumped himself into the lead, and ho and Chatmos went down to work together. A bad jump by the latter left the' favourite well clear, and he ran in an easy winner by a dozen lengths.) Ormoloid fell at the last fenco when running second. Chatmos stayed on better ithan Eiya and ■ got second money. ' A big field of sixteen runners faced the 6tarter in the Esk Hack Handicap. Uupahu, -Miltiplioity, and Powder Fox were about evenly fancied. The start was a fair one, but after the jump away several horses oollided. This left Powder Fox, Rupahu, Allen Boone, and Sea Lord clear of . the others. Kupahu, on the fence, was first into the straight, and alongside of him was Sea Lord, who was followed by Powder Fox and Allen Boone. The sticks were out on the two leaders, and the light-weight ran on the best and won. by two lengths. Allen Doone ran on well and beat Powder Fox for third.place. The Hastings horse got badly interfered with after going a furlong or he might have won. He stripped big, and the racs is sure to improve him. Multiplicity got on to something s heel racing round the bend -and was nearly down, and Basher Boy fell at the 6ame spot,

A. smart shower fell just before the Cup, for which Dispatch Carrier, Eaupani, and Midnight Star were scratched. At the first attempt the field got away to a good start, and passing the stand they, were in a line. Hyettus and Bertrada singled themselves out going round tho bend, and they were followed by Indigo, Rewi Poto, and Fair Rosamond; Down the back Multiply moved up a bit, and round the bottom bend the chances of Indigo, Bertrada, Fair Rosamond, and Eewi Poto were being called. Bertrada, Indigo, and Eewi Poto entered the straight together, and Fair Rosamond came fast on the oufeide. In. a great .struggle Eewi Poto outstayed Fair Rosamond and won by a neck. Bertrada was a length away, and then came Indigo, Multiply, and Sir Alba. Birkline was the last to finish. Ho was tailed off. ■ , There were nine Btarters in the Trial Hack Handicap, and Black Heart was made a screaming hot order. Bad luck again dogged the big gelding, for after the. start he was badlj bumped, and then only suffered defeat by a narrow margin. At the 6tart Admiral Beatty jumped away smartly from Spain and Hylami, with the favourite next. Admiral Beatty ha da'.good lead entering tho straight, but he hung out and Black Heart got up on the fence. In a ding-dong finish no one but the judge could say which horse had won. Spain was two lengths away, and then came Hylami and Ormesby. All'the' acceptors started in the Welter Handicap. Multikoff, Black All and Golden Sky being fancied in that order. Caher Davon broke the barrier, several times, but .at the start all got away fairly well. Golden Sky led down to the back, but was steadied after going ,two furlongs, and Caher. Davon led round the bend from Kainiriohe and Jerceler. With a furlong to go Kaminohei" had shaken off Caher Davon,-but-'. Multikoff I ''and Blackall put in challenges and in a good finish the Ivarjmu gelding beat'-.Blackall-bv a neck. Caher Davon was clear oi Multikoff. The latter.'had the worst of the luck as "he was on the outside.the whole way. • Gold-Foil was withdrawn from the Sapling -Stakes, leaving, eight runners. The race was run in a blinding shower, but when'the colours became-perceptible Eligible- and Loreto were well clear of the, others. . Hyginas came very fast round the band and displacel.Loreto. He was. alongside of Eligible at the distance, but his effort was too much and he failed to finish on. Eligible won by a couple of lengths with Loreto the same distance be. hind Hyginas. Sicily and Finistere were' the "next to finish. • Eligible and -Loreto were, equal in demand.

The brack was fairly heavy by the time the Hack Welter came on. At the finish Bodenham and Whakahoki had the race to themselves and the latter got the'verdict by a head. Royal Favourite and Ballyhar, made the early running, brit once'in* the straight the other pair collared them and cleared out in front.

Croesus was withdrawn from the Flying Handioap when the track became heavy. .Golden Sky, who had raced earlier, was also .withdrawn. This left four runners and the Karamu filly Husheen was a gowl favourite on account of her lightweight. However, she did not get the break anticipated in the. early part of the race, and after leading till, well down the : straight, Chortle came on and beat her. Red Book, who was tailed off in the first part, finished ■ well and got third place. THE RESULTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) . , Napier, March 12.
