A representative gathering of upwards of 100 supporters of the' Labour cause in politics met last night as guests of Messrs. A. H.' Hindmarsh, M.P., D. M'Laren. an'd -F.. T. Moore at a smoke concert•• jti Hall's Booms, Cuba Street.' An extensive toast list with appropriate speeches and'a number of songs, and other items of entertainment constituted the programme for the evening. . Frequent , references were made by speakers, to the political situation and the increasing cost of living and the general'trend of the advice of the speakers was that the Labour Party should _aim at an independent attitude in politics. It was pointed out by more than one speaker that the Australian Labour, parties in. the Commonwealth and . in' the States had achieved their present success by first allying themselves with the Liberals and later, after the Liberals had. .coalesced with the tother parties, forming the Opposition .which in the end became too strong lor the combined parties.
