MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS
WHICH SITE? Matters are a little-mixed over the choice of site for the proposed municipal golf links. About the middle of last year the City Council approved' of a site at Berhampore on the hill slopes t# the north of Wakefield PaVk. The spot was visited by a sub-committee, inspected and approved by wielders of the clubs, and then, after being approved by tbe council, was dropped. 'Some months later -a proposal cropped up to make the links on the eastern aspect of the bills at Kilbirnie on Town Belt land, without any mention of. Berhampore, and Messrs. Simpson ancb Watt, the two professional golf-players here, were called upon to express, their views. Mr. Simpson reported dead against the site, and, strange to say, Mr. Watt approved. When experts disagree, what was the council to do ? It did not know, but Mr. Simpson, who turned the Kilbirnie proposal down, said that the sand lands of the bay (where the city has a big holding) provided almost an ideal location for golf links.
All this sparring Tor a site after tlie council's original decision did not please the residents of Berhampore and Island Bay, and when they waited on the Reserves Committee to protest against the council's vacillation, they made it pretty clearly known that t-hsy were ot opinion that "the wires nad been pulled." Councillor Geo. Frost, whG agreed t'hat the council had approved of tho Berhampore site, stated that it was untoijtunate that there were no golf players on' the Reserves Committee, ' but they were determined on getting the best site for links obtainable, and lie was calling on two well-known and thoroughly reliable playore to advise tho committee in tho matter. ■
