OCEAN RAIDER'S EXPLOITS
PRINZ EITEL FRIEDRICH IN TROUBLE AMERICAN' SHIP SUNK SUBMARINE PIRATES SINK SEVEN STEAMERS HEROIC DEEDS IN FRANCE ' HEAVY FIGHTING, EAST AND WEST The war news to-day is a most interesting budget. The development of tho Allies' attack oil the Dardanelles is rapidly producing a stite of ohaos in the condition of thfe public mind at Constantinople. Terrific cannonading and the sound of stupendous explosions liave been heard from tho Dardanelles', in places miles away. The Turks have placarded Syria with announcements that it may be necessary ; "for strategical reasons" to evacuate the Dardanelles, and tho commander of tho Gocben, now lying a practically useless mass of inert stoel, declares that he will blow up his vessel sooner than allow it to fall into the hands of the Allies. Seven small steamers are posted at Lloyd's as having been sunk yesterday, tho inference being obvious- A . German submarine, attempting an attack on a trawler, fouled tho trawl, turned turtle, and sunk. Tho opeau raider, Prinz Eitel Fredrich, has turned up at an American port for repairs—permission having been granted by the United States Neutrality Board, and the recital of her doings shows that she has beon busy on the commerce routes. Unfortunately for her, one of the victims was tlie American steamer William Frye, and tho authorities at Washington are irritated •in consequence. In the Western front at various points there have been sharp encounters. Tho Germans have made two unsuccessful counter-attacks on the village of Nouve Chap'pelle, while on the rest of Ithe front they have done- little better. There is a thrilling story of French heroism in France, displayed in the attack on Beausejour ■ Farm. In the Eastern theatre the Russian offensive in Northern and Central Poland is progressing satisfactorily, and in Galicia the Anstrians have sustained further losses in their attempts to stem the Russian advance in the Carpathians.
