BEAVY;: FIGHTING .IN POLAND

■ The war news to-day diverts attention once more to the operations of .the German .submarine pirates in British coastal waters. Three steamers have'been sunk, and without warning, 'the Tesult being loss of life. One of the steamers sank so rapidly that-the lifeboats were dragged down with her. The reports indicate considerable a,ctivity.'.on the part of one or two submarines off the mouth of the Mersey, near the great port of-Liverpool. In the Dardanelles the naval operations are at present confined to covering the work of/the minesweepers in the ■Narrows by a-heavy fire from the battleships, , directed at the fortified works at Chanalc, on the Asiatic si de . of' the Narrows. ' The big guns" of the British battleship Queen Elizabeth'- have again ' been ■in evidence, with devastating effect. -/In the West- ■ ern theatre there has been great activity along certain portions of the battle-front, particularly in the Champagne district, and in the fteims-Argonne region, and the' results have been favourable to the 'Allies. In the Eastern theatre, fighting, of the most-, desperate character is raging along the whole battle-front from the Nieme'n .to ■the Vistula.'- The present operations. are described by . one correspondent as' being the last phase ot the German general offensive— once more has the great German stroke, fallen flat. /.'Considerable interest attaches to a- proposal, by/'the British Government': to embody in legislation most drastic powers for the control. of factories, and judging by'the tone'of the debate in the House of Commcihs the Bill will go through without' opposition.
