SLAUGHTERMEN'S UNION
NEW AWARD FOR ABATTOIR . , - . . WORK. , At a recent meeting of tie Ngahauranga and Petone Slaughtermen's Union the question of obtaining a new award for abattoir work was discussed, and it was'pointed out that some difficulty would be met with under the.present system of tendering for the work. At present the contract is fixed up. by the council, and the wages are arranged for afterwards, between the contractor and the mop. . Tenders .will close - on Thursday/of next week . for killing and slaughtering for, the next three years, sud the union decided to notify ■ (as far is possible) those persons who are likely to be tenderers that there is a prospect of the union's. aßking for an increase of wages to the extent of ss. per week, so that whoever may be the successful tenderer will have some opportunity of knowing what he has to meet with in the'near future. ■ It is also intended to ask for the abolition of- Sunday work. the union considering .that' work 011 this day,is unnecessary, as at other abattoirs in New Zealand, the climate is warmer than 'in Wellingiton, the practice of. Sunday work has •been' abolished;for'some .time, ;a'nd'if men are called .upon to work on this particular day special ■ rates ' are' paid. A committee":has been appointed, and a new set of conditions • has _ been drafted, which' will., be filed in the Court of Arbitration shortly. It was decided to' make, an annual ■ contribution of £20 .to the Petone. Ambulance Corps, the members to receive* free .use of the ambulance in return. . The sum of £2 is to be contributed to the new Belgian Fund. "• , . • ,
