THE BANKRUPTCY ACT

AND THE OFFICIAL ASSIGNEE. In his annual address at the annual meeting of New Zealand Accountants' and Auditors' Association last night, the president (Mr. E. \V. Evans) referred to the fact that during the past year, meetings had been held in certain towns with a view or haying the Bankruptcy Act amended. "Such a proposal is no doubt very desirable," lie said, "but incidental to this there is also tile proposal—if not oxpressed it is implied—to abolish the office of the Official' Assignee in Bankruptcy and in his stead to create official liquidators. I know that I am introducing a controversial subject,, still I wish to express my opinion to the commercial accountants that I think the existence of the Official Assignee's office is one of the best insurance funds against bad debts that anyone who is responsible for accounts can 'have."
