STEAMER ASHORE IN A FOG
A NEW ZEALANDER'S EXPERIENCE. ■ Running through a fog bank in a vain effort to locate the Defiance Lumber Company's dockß, the steamer Hazel Dollar, Captain Ridley, ran ashore in Tacoma harbour at 11 o'clock on January • 20 (says the Tacoma "Times"). . . . She was proceeding under a slow bell when she struck tie sand, and the shock threw 6ailore and officers flat. The Hazel Dollar, one of the large fleet of Dollar lino boats, arrived in Tacoma on the Saturdav from San Francisco, to load lumber for the Orient. She was proceeding to the Defiance dock feeling her way by the compass and fog Whistles, when she struck the sand.
Mr. L. V. R. Carmine, a New Zealand wireless operator, who was on beard the Hazel Dollar, writes: "The impact threw us fiat. . . The water was boiling'up all round the steamer, and we dia not know exactly whore we were because of the thick fog. Worse still, one wireless was out' of commission owing to the neutrality laws forcing us to dismantle our aerials. Wo dia not get any assistance for some time, and then tugs were unable to shift us. ■ We lay fast for 24 hours, with a considerable list to starboard, but did not fall low enough to take in water. However, we listed so muoh that when tho tide ran out it was difficult to 6tand on the deck."
