FIRES
BLAZE AT MASTERTON. (By Teleerapii.—Special CorreeDondont.! ' Masterton, March 7. The ! nine-roomed residence of Mr. W. B. Chennells, at the south' end of Masterton, was totally destroyed by fire at about 3 o'clock this morning, together with the contents. The fire originated in the back of the building, and practically nothing was saved. Tho building was insured for £1000 in the New Zealand Insurant Company, and the furniture for £300 in the Royal Office. Mr." Chennells is a heavy loser. OUTBREAKS IN THE CITY. Fires—one in Tui Street and one in Herbert Street—resulted in calls to the Central Brigade on Saturday, buy in. each case the flames had been p'actically extinguished before the 1/hgado arrived on the scene. At both places the damage done was ■ of ro consequence. A fire at Khandallah at half-past one o'olock on Saturday morning resulted in the destruction of a six-roomed dwelling on the Cashmere Estate. Tho building was owned and occupied by Mr. S. R. Hodgesj who was roused from his sleep by the heat. He found the kitchen in iiames, and as tho locality is without a water suply—the ratepayers rejected the water proposals some time fire spread rapidly until the house and contents were destroyed. The adjoining building, owned by Mr. F. Norling, had a narrow esotpe, and but for the strenuous efforts of eight or nine of the residents would almost certainly have been destroyed also. Two of the four housos erected on tho Cashmere Estato liave now been burned down, and tho latest fire will probably cause the water supply question to come into prominenco again.
