SITUATION UNCHANGED ON BRITISH FRONT. The High Commissioner reports:— ( • London, March 5 f 6.15 p.m. Sir John French reports:—Since last owmmuiuque tho situation on. tlio front Ims remained unchanged. The results of artillery exchanges have been consistently satisfactory. Minor enterprises are of daily occurrence, usually, on our initiative. South of the Ypres Canal we captured a German advanced tieuch on the night of the Ist and '2nd, but it was rendered untenable bv the enemy's arillery lire, and had ro be evacuated. In tbo same neighbourhood, on the 2nd, the enemy was forced to evacuate a trench, our artillery firo enabling our infantry to inflict several casualties from the fire of the trenches. On March 2, ono of our aeroplanes, flynng behind tbo Gorman lines, twice attacked single German machines, and forced both to descend. t ~ GERMAN GUARDS SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES. (Reo. March 1 ?, 3 p.m.) Paris, March 6. Official.—We repulsed twelve attempts to push trenches into contact with ours on the Dune?. Our counter-attacks at Notre Dame de Lorette. were a complote success. We drove back bhe enemy beyond the 6tartin° point, and captured a machine gun company. We made marked progress at Perthes, inflicting extremely heavy losses by surrounding a company of Prussian Guards. We captured six hundred metres of trenches at Mesuil, and several trenches and ravines north-west of Beausejour. We made important progress at .Vauquois, and reached the entanglements at Cellos. During heavy trench fighting on tho Reims-Betheny-Prunay front the Germans used aerial torpedoes, but nevertheless lost heavily. Our progress at Perthes has been maintained. There was a lively, tannonade elsewhere. PANIC CAUSED BY, FRENCH ARTILLERY FIRE. High Commissioner's message:— London, March 6, '4.50 p.m. Army casualties:—Officers, wounded, two; missing, ono; men, killed ID4, wounded 477, missing 229; prisoners 46; rejoined 5. Paris reports progress is generally maintained. Near De Vievills-cn-Haye, north of Pont-a-Mousson,_ the Allies, by. a well-directed fire oil a farm, caused a panic among the soldiers who occupied it. They fled to the woods, and were pursued by our artillery.

The Germans brought large effeotives into action, who suffered a serious reverse. We progressed at Hartmanns-Wilerskopf, and blew, up an ammunition depot at Cernay.
