Sydney, March 5. The Hon. George Biact, Minister of Agriculture, in advocating the "tote" Bill declared that the bookmaker was a parasite who could easily be disponsed with.

The Akaroa meeting takes place to-day. Acceptances for the Opunake meeting close to-night. The Te Aroha meeting takes place today and Monday. Jem, who changed hands recently, has left the Porirua stables, and is now trained by T. Jones at Waipukurau. Mr. F. Armstrong, owner of Golden Water and Prizebloom, cams to Wellington at the conclusion, of the Dannevirke meeting, and went south last night on the way to Mt. Cook, where he will spend a fortnight. •At the conclusion, of the racing at Dannevirke Jockeys B. Deeley, S. Reid, and F. Flynn went north, and will be riding at Te Axoha to-day. Deeley has a mount in all the flat races, and Reid will ride Cloudy Dawn in the Hurdles. The Nelson Cup meeting, which tikes place on Wednesday end Thursday next, promises to be the most successful in the history of - the olub. In the Cup there are twelve acoeptors in place of five last year, and in the Flying Handicap the. whole of the entrants have paid up. The nominations. show an increase all round, and the' fields should be big on both days. Jockeys O'Halloran (who is engaged in every, race on the opening day), W. Price (who will ride Monologue, Excitement, and Want), and M. MTJonalcf (who will ride the Porirua horses), and A. Reed (who will steer Plunder, Lady Vladimir, and Otakura) are leaving by boat to-day. Admiral Beatty, the favourite Sn _ the Dannevirke Scurry, is one of F. Lind's Greenmeadows team, and was bred by Mr. G. Donnelly. He is now owned by a Napier sportsman, Mr. A. Sellard, who purchased him from his breeder in January last. • He drew No. 1 position at the barrier, but got chopped out at the start, and lost several lengths. Under the circumstances, he did well to get second. Different tactics were tried on Suratura on the second day at. Dannevirke, •and in place of being taken to_ the front O'Halloran rode 'her in behind. Sir Moutoa and Discussion had a big break on flie Carterton-owned mare just before the straight was reached, but when her rider- asked her to go on and win she did so with ea§e. Mr. Jas. Armstrong,..vice-president of the Dannevirke Racing Club, is proceeding to the front with the next reinforcements. He holds the Tanks of captain. Prince Laddo will start in the Nelson Cup on Wednesday, and will be ridden by W. O'Halloran. The same_ horseman will ride Mowbray in the Flying and Abby in the Maiden 1 Hack Race. At Auckland Glittering Sands was offered for sale by auction at Messrs. A. Buckland and Sons' yards last week, but failed to find a purchaser. The Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, further increased his lead in the matter of winning horsemen by piloting Want (twice), Multiply, Multiplicity, Loreto, and Melodist to victory at Dannevirke. An advertisement referring to the annual meeting of the Nelson Jockey Club, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday next, appears in this issue. The club notifies that all profits arising out of the meeting are to be to the Empire Defence Fund. Wellington patrons will leave by the Pateena on Monday, at 9 p.m., and Nikau on Tuesday, at 5 p.m.
