THRIFT. RAILWAY RETURNS. One apparent sign of the exercisa of thrift by the people of the Dominion is shown in a comparative statement of traffic on the railways for the period April 1, 1914, to' January 30. 1915, which was published in tho Gazette'last night-. This return shows that while more people have used the railways in this period than in the same period of the preceding financial year, a considerable reduction is to be observed in the number of first-class tickets issued. The people are travelling second-class and saving money. The total number of tickets issued l in the period ended January 30, 1915, was 11,268,395, as against 11,086,148 for the corresponding period of last financial year, an increase of 186,247. There was an increase of 15,995 single and 216,298. return secondclass tickets, and a decrease of 11,610 single and 38,436 return, first-class tickets. The total railway revenue _ for tne same period still shows an increase— £3,369,860 as against £3,283,621.' The expenditure also shows an increase —. £2,438,265 as against £2,405,761 —but the expenditure for tho period just ended is 72,36 per cent, of the .revenue, whereas in tho last year's period it fras 73.27 per cent. Af course this ponod takes in four months before the war. For the four-weekly period ended January 30, the figures are not so good, tho , revenue showing a 'decrease and tho expenditure an increase. Tho revenue was £324,566 as against £352,219 last year, and the expenditure £228,268 as against £224,555. ' . Messrs.
