MOTOR MECHANICS' DISPUTE

BEFORE CONCILIATION COONCTC/ The adjourned meeting of the Conciliation Council, appointed to inquire mto the dispute between the Maaawatu Motor Mechanics' Union and the employers, was held yesterday, the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) presiding. The assessors for the' union were: Messrs. T. Bruce, W. EL" Bell, and A. Freeman, and for the employers Messrs. H-. Rogers, T. Inglis, and G. H. Scott, while Mr. W. A. W. Grenfell Wa6 present as ageut for the employers. ; On February 10 the parties had met m the Commissioner's office, but after a. brief sitting the meeting was adjourned in order to give the employers ail opportunity of fully considering the union's demands and stating whether they would discuss them or file counterproposals. Yesterday Mr. Hally stated that the counter-proposals had been' filed, and immediately forwarded to the representatives of the union. They were now there to discuss them.

Mr. Bruce said the union had been rather surprised to receive the counterproposals in view of the fact that agreements lad been reached in other centres. However, they had come along to eee if any good reasons couH be put forward in support of those proposals. Mr. Rogers declared that so far as ; the agreement in Napier was ooncerned ho could say something which might throw light on the subject.' He had had a conversation with a Napier employer and was staggered to mid that the latter knew nothing about it. The employers, it appeared, had met in Napier and had decided to reject the union's proposals in toto. They had appointed assessors and instructed them accordingly. The information, which Mr. Rogers gave the Napier employer referred to, aDout the proposals having been accepted, was the first he had heard of it. Probably if inquiries were made, it would be found that the same 6tate of affairs existed in Hast-erton and Wangaiiui, where agreements had also been reached. 1

Mr. Inglis stated that, as far as Masterton was concerned, a representative meeting of employers, which had been held two.months ago, had decided to reject the union's proposals. He could not understand the change in their attitude in the interval.

Mr. Hally pointed out thai Mr. Rogers's statement of what had happened in Napiar was nothing unusual. It very often happened that employers were not interested until the last minute, and did not know to what they were committed until the award was in force. As to the position 4a Ma6terton, he (Mr. Hally)' had had a conversation with one of the large men there, and the latter had expressed the opinion that the union's demands were very reasonable,

_ The proposals were subsequently considered in detail, some being agreed to and others remaining in dispute. The final hearing will take place at Palmer§ton North. The agreements reached m other parts of the Wellington district included the condition that no. new award 6hould come into operation until the Arbitration Court decided that normal conditions prevailed;
