NATIONAL RESERVE

In connection with the extension of the National Reserve movement to the railway employees, the General Man-. | ager in a circular says the object is "to give to those members of the railway servico not connected with the Territorials the opportunity of trainI ing, so that should occasion arise and they are called on, they will be able to assist in the protection of New Zealand, and more particularly of its railway system." The organisation is to consist of a central committee, to be called the executive, which will be located in Wellington, and of district committees in each of the following j contres (to begin .with): —Whangarei, '•Auckland, Hamilton, -Gisborne, New Plymouth, _ Wanganui, Palinerston North, Napier, Wellington, Picton, Nelson,. Westport, Greymouth, Christ--church, Timaru, Oamarii, Dunedin, and 'Invercurgill. All matters of general 'organisation arid policy will be determined by the .executive, and all matters of local control will be dealt with by the district committees. Membership is open to any member of the railway service of New Zealand who is not connected with the Territorial force: The training is'; to consist of rudimentary drill, route marching, lectures, and more particularly instruction in the mechanism and practical use of the rifle. Where possible range firing and competitions will be arranged for. The General Manager is prepared to grant free railway'passes to and from the nearest range to bona fide members attending rifle shooting competitions and practices organised and managed as parades by. district committees by arrangement with the Executive Committee. The Wellington district convener, Mr. E. Dawson, has arranged for a meeting to be held on Friday night, when preliminary work will be done.
