The French "Eye-Witness" tells this touching story Corporal Philippe, who vras in charge of a patrol, made-ms men take shelter, and then continued to advance alone under the fire,of the'enemy. Grievously wounded, he was able to give ail account of his mission, and died saying, "Que voulezvous, lieutenant P Someone had, to go. I am content to have done my duty." , The commander of the regiment having -Tn-itton to Mine. Philippe to inform her of the heroic death of her husband, received the following reply:— Monsieur le Commandant,—l tnanl: you very sincerely for the way you have taken my great .grief, and I am grateful to you for having informed me ot the glorious death of my dear husband. To know that he died as'all frenchmen ought to die assuages my great erief a little, and you can be sure that, if ho ended his task in dying.for our mother-country, France, I, his companion, shall on my part have but one aim—that is to make his two little daughters worthy women of future France, and I shall be able in the future to teach them to venerato their father. Know also, M. le Commandant, that wo cannot, even if we suffer, but admire his action, because, if it is necessary at any hour to form a. regiment of women, their numbers could be counted by tho thousand, myself among the first. Accept, therefore, my sincoro thanks aiid deep rcspect.—The Wife of a Brave Ma,,, SIARCISLLE PHILIPPE.
