RACING IN AUSTRALIA V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. MOUNTAIN KNIGHTi WINS THE ST. LEGER. Br Taleerftßl—Preoa AssoolaMon— OonyrigW (Rec. February 28, 7.15 p.m.) Melbourne, February 27. 'A big joyous crowd gathered at F'cmlngton. There was no falling-off in the usual gaiety of the occasion, and little if any in the numbers present, severe drought conditions notwithstanding. The course was good, and the weather bright. The fashionable attendance included the Governor-General (Sir. Ronald MunroFerguson) and a big party. Though some of the fields were small, the racing was very interesting, and at times exciting. Mountain Knight's time for the St. Leger. was one second slower than Radnor's previous record. Blague's win in the Newmarket was a comfortable effort. Flash of Steel, Herringbone, and Traquette all failed at the last furlong. Smart, who also rode last year's winner, rode a good race, and the win was very popular, form being sustained. The Essendon Stakes event was the most exciting race ever seen at' Flemington. Each redo to a vigorous finish on terms for quite a furlong. Di Gama's race gained him friends for the Australian Cup. . Results:— NEWMARKET HANDICAP, of 2500 sovs.

EMPERADOR WINS JACKSON STAKES. LADOGA SCORES AGAIN. (By Telegraph.'—B»ocicl Correspondent.) Wanganui, February 27. The Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn ; Meeting concluded to-day in fine weather an'd before another largo attendance. The totalisator handled £29,991 10s., as against £30,294 on the second day last year. ' Tho total for the meeting was ,£57,158, as against -£57,201 for the corresponding meeting in 1914. ' R«wi Poto was slightly better supported than Banksia in tho Autumn Handicap, and the two of them finished in the dividends. Aster was quickest to begin, but Te Hou Hou and Zotes soon disposed of him, and followed by Banksia they raced to the bottom turn,, where tho chestnut mare forged ahead. He was clear of tho field as the straight was entered.) Rewi Poto put in a strong challenge, but he had no chance wit'h< the light-weight, though he decisively beat the others. Leonta, ■ who is ooming back to form, was third, and AstoT, Crawford, and Austin finished together. The stewards inquired into the running of the winner, but the explanation tendered was satisGolc&tream was a- strong order in the Matarawa Hack Handicap. Jumping out well, he was nevor further back ■ than fourth,' and in the straight he had taken charge, and despite. a strong run by Black Heart he ran. in a comfortable winner. The second horse got a bad.bump at tho half-mile, and New York did not saddle up as well as on tho opening day. Bivouac, who made tho early running, was third, and Fortify fourth. Boldstroke played up as usual, and got badly left. . There were only four runners in the Jackson Stakes.. The Mason stable started both Binieter and Emperador. Flying Start and Dinner Gong made up tho field. Tho last-named whipped round as the barrier went up, and hit Bimetcr. This left Flying Start and Emperador out together, but Bimoter soon r&ceu to the two-year-old, and the pair ran together at a very fast pace, the first three' furlongs taking 36 seconds. Hero Emperador was five lengths away, but Wilson then took hini out a bit, and he improved h ; s position considerably on the better going. When the straight entrance was reached he was alongside the two-year-old, going comfortably, and in the run home lie won by a length. The Open Hurdles was a fine race, and incidentally it resulted in the. downfall of a hot favourite in Ke*S. At tho «hrt Glonorohy led Leapub and Kew, with
Flingot tailed off. ICew rushed. into the lead at the half-mile, but when in front he jumped badly, and Sty rax headed ■Mm three furlongs from homo. At the last fence Kew, Styrax, aJid Flingot took off together. The first day's winner made the best jump, but Hingot, finishing strongly, taught him on the post and beat 'him by a' neck. Kew was a fair third, and Glenorchy fourth. Naupata was mado a very hot favourite in the Hack Hurdles, but he fenced badlv, and after a good (inisli fie was . beaten by a narrow margin by Tirohanga, who seemed to bo much improved by his race on the first day. Master Strowan, who finished third, should have won, as he was galloping much faster than the others at the finish. St. Gate was second favourite. Ho led for five furlongs, but then lost his place and finished last. The whole of the acceptors started in the Stakes. Einaldo was a good favourite, but ho had to be content with second place behind Ladoga, who is now back to form. Deeley did'not get him out too well, but he got on to the rails, and never left them till he was in a winning position. Byron and Moutoa Girl were prominent passing the stand, but at the sis furlongs El Gallo had taken charge. Fair Rosamond and Rinaldo Tushed to the front at the half-mile, and Ladoga took third place. At the bottom of the straight the latter had taken charge, and in the run home he won nicely _by two lengths. Rinaldo was a head in front of Fair Eosamonrl. Kilrain and Invader were the next to finish.
Ararat and -Draft were evenly supported iu the Harrison Hack Handicap, and in. a fast-run race the Fordell mare won well. She was followed home by Sylvandale, Quo Vadis, and Draft _in that order. Sylvandale and Mahlstick wero prominent at the start, but at the l>alfmile Ararat moved up, and she took charge a furlong further oil. • Nothing could reach her in the run home, and, ridden out, she won by three lengths. Postillion had nearly halt the investments on the machine in the Farewell Handicap, but though ha did a smart preliminary ho failed badly in the race, which went to Belnsco, with Chakwana and Ineuru in the places. !By Telcerauli—Press Association.'
