BATHING FATALITY
GIRL L'OSES HER LIFE OFF NAPIER BEACH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! Napier, February 28. A sad bathing fatality occurred on the beach this morning. A girl named Florence Miller, seventeen years of age, was bathing in the surf with three friends when the backwash carried her out. A young man named Andrew Robertson made a gallant attempt at rescue. but was twice thrown violently on the beach, and narrowly escaped losing his own life. The body was washed up an hour later, half a mile from the place where it was carried in. A very heavy north-east sea was running at the time. . At tho inquest this afternoon a member of the Life Saving Society expressed the opinion that his society • should be given power to prevent bathing when the sea is dangerous. The Coroner advised that power shonld be taken bv the Borough Council by by-law to prevent surf bathing when the breakers are dangerous. A verdict of aoo'dcutal drowning was returned.

Tho Fire Brigade competitions were completed to-day in fine' weather. } There were so many in the two events yesterday that the results were not known till 4 p.m. _ The unfinished event was completed this morning, with the following results: — Hose and Hydrant.—Hillside Railway 1, Timaru 2, Marton 3. In the first run Hillside ana Timaru tied. In the runoff Hillside won. , Additional results are :— Disabled "Event (Five Men). —Carterton. lmin. 43 3-ssec.
