When a party of surveyors wereen* gaged in laying out a 6ite for Papa* kainga, certain members of the tribe objected and about a dozen men and women descended on the surveyors, capturing the theodolite and proceeding to eject them from the land. Being outnumbered the surveyors, tre* tired to the ■ Government reserve adjoining, when they surveyor was. enabled to complete his' w»rk. The Maoris contented themselves .with volleys of the most abusive epithets, accompanied by frightful grimaces and insulting gestures. They were replied to with vim by the Maoris in the surveying party. • _ The incident was the outcome; of 'differences of tea yeaTs' standing. -
