Dominion reporter on liis return to town he expressed keen satisfaction • at the stamp of men now undergoing training. . They ;were quite up to the standard of previous reinforcements, and were getting on very well with their work. • Referring to a statement emanating from a trooper's letter sent from Cairo to Christchurch, and saying - that the men did not-get enough: to oat, Mr. Allen pointed out that General Godley had' written to him to the effect that the men were getting an excess of the stipulated rations, as the general deemed it advisable to treat them liberally, in view of the hard work they were doing. The trooper's. letter, which was telegraphed to Wellington, said the men were working hard,,had plenty of fresh air, and were as fit as ffie devil. "If they are as fit as the devil," said Mr. Allen, "they must be getting plenty of food. The lei'itsr is contradictory."-
