Bell and Inspector Hugo were present. Mr. Bell explained the difficulties in regard to ;the first two, but undertook to lcok further into them, and would refer the (third to the Minister of Customs. When the conference resumed, Mr. "Bell addressed the delegates, and explained the action in- connection with exempting firemen from military service. j'This was not completed when war broke jout, and the matter, was then dropped tfor the time being. Gold stars for 25 years' service were [presented to five members present, and '.were also awarded two who were absent. After the installation of officers, the pconference closed to. meet at .Westport next year. ' THE COMPETITIONS. Timaru, February 25.
