OPERATIONS IN THE WESTERN THEATRE
IMPORTANT .SUCCESS AT LES EPARGES FIERCE TRENCH WARFARE NEAR YPRES Paris, February 24. A communique states that there is nothing to report except a few successful actions at Auberive-sur-Suippes, and progress at Perthes. [Auberive-sur-Suippes and Perthes are in the region lying, between Reims and the western side of the Arpoirue forest. The Suippes is a tributary of . the. Aisne.] The High Commissioner reports:— "Paris reports that occasional artillery combats occurred along the line from the Lys to the Aisne,.the results being favourable to the Allies. Several batteries were silenced in the region of the Meuse. "Detailed reports of the success at lies Eparges show that it. was of great importance. There were heavy enemy. losses, and a fimall part of the front was taken by the Allies. Upwards of 600 dead Germans were found. Prisoner's say that two regiments which had been driven from their positions lost upwards of three thousand—more than half their effectives." Y SANGUINARY. FIGHTING ON YPRES-COMINES CANAL. • ' London, February. 25. . "Eye-witness," in a story covering the operations from February 14 to February 17, says that there was heavy, fighting continuously along the YpresComines Canal. The Germans attacked in some strength, and the enemy's dead lay. t'kick along .our { front. Our trench-mortars did good work, and wo held'the lines despite considerable pressure. On February 17 the enemy stormed our trenches, after blowing them up.We recovered the trenches, which were heaped with the German dead. The losses on both sides were considerable, the enemy's exceeding ours. THE ATTACK ON THE DARDANELLES , e .TURKS' FORTIFYING THE BOSPHORUS. Athens, February 24. The Turks are hastily fortifying the Bosphorus. London, February 24. Constantinople officially announces that the Allies wasted six hundred shells in the bombardment of the Dardanelles, while the Ottoman gunners with fourteen shells put out of action the flagship and two other warships.—"Times" and Sydney "Suu" services. SERVIANS WATCHING ALBANIA. . • • ' Athens, February 24. ' A Servian army corps has arrived at Resna, to repel any further advance by the Albanians.
