John's College, Auckland. After threo years' work in New Zealand.' the Rev. Cuthbert Maclean, as he was then known, left for England to gain experience in slum work in London. , At the outbreak of waf he ! volunteered for the front, and soon gained a commission. He has seen almost continuous service, and had many thrilling escapes, on one occasion vacating a spot he had- spent. several hours in two minutes before it was blown to atoms. Lieutenant- Maclean was wounded; just before Christmas, for the second time. On New Year's Day a Royal Warrant was issued, instituting a new decoration entitled "The Military Cross." . It consists of a cross of silver, having on each arm the Imperial Crown and bearing in the centre the letters G.R.I. , No person is eligible for this decoration unless he is a captain, a commissioned officer of a lower grade, or warrant officer in the British Army or Indian or Colonial Military Forces, and the Cross is awarded only to. officers of the above ranks on the recommendation of the Secretary of State for War. Foreign officers of an equivalent rank to those mentioned above, who have been associated in military operations with, the British, Indian, or'colonial, forces are eligible for the honorary award of the Cross. The Military Cross does not confer any' individual precedence nor does it entitle the recipient to any addition after his name as part/of his description or title.
