Last Friday, at 4.50, It. S. R. Stcdman arrived at our Christchtfrch garage in his 10-23-h.p. Humber Ca# from Danedin. Mr, Stedman left Dunedin (where lie ig agent for Humbor (are) on his annual business trip to Cbristcliurch, ait G. 20 a.m., and maintained'an. average speed' throughout the "jouraej of over 25 miles per h«ur. The Humber. Car weighs 18cwt. fully 'equipped for the r<*.d, and has already -done over 11,000 niles without ai mechanical stop. The consumption was worked out carefully' by Mr. 0. J. 'Wilson, of Invercargill, who accompanied Mr. Stednian, and it Records; 30 miles tc> a gallon. On a gallon' of lubricating oil the -Humber runs 17? C miles, ■ and .the running cost approximate* throa ' guineas for 1000 miles. These ore" facts, proved and certified by Mr. Wilson. ' Thero is no need to say more. •The Postal Department notifies that the R.M.S. Marama, which was unable to leave San IVancisoo on February 3, owing to her having to undergo minor is : due to -leave : there to-day and to arrive at. Auckland ;on - March 16. She is bringing mails for New Zealand, but the Department is unable to say where they are from or to give the number of bags, as the mails which should have come to New Zealand_ by the Marama had she left San Francisco on due 'date were directed to be, seut to Vancouver for dispatch thence by the Niagara leaving there on- February 17 It is expected that the Marama will be in Sydney to take up her usual running on March 27. The adjourned meeting of the Otago High School Old Boys" was held last evening at Turnbnll's auction-room.; Major. A. R. Hislop/ V.D., was in the cilair, and there was a good muster of old boys. It was decided that as some ■fifty odd had signed on as members of tho National Reserve, those present should make further -efforts to bring all old boys into the fold; and that a full muster be called for next Tuesday evening at Turnbnll's auction-room, wheroeny who had not so'far attended should ■ do so without fail. The chairman of the Wellington Education Board (the . Hon. J. G. W. Aitken) stated at yesterday's meeting of the board that it had always been the aim of the hoard to improve the residences of teachers, ,so. that -their surroundings should be as pleasant as possible. He regretted to' state, however, that the Education Department had now announced that a grant for the purpose could no longer be made. No doubt, he said, the war had something to "do with the decision. Subsequently the' board decided to complete the works proposed. .
