THREE STEAMERS SUNK IN THE ATLANTIC
IS THE KARLSRUHE AT WORK AGAIN ? 1 \ ' London, February 21. Tie steamers Potaro, Highland Brae, and Hemisphere,' and two sailing vessels, have heen sunk in.the Atlantic, presumably by the Karlsruhe. The crews, numbering 192, landed at Buenos Aires,- also 51 passengers, from the' Highland Brae.' ' , TThe Hemisphere, was a steel screw steamer of 3488 tons, built in 1897 for the Hemisphere Steam Ship Company. The Highland Brae was a. Nelson' litter, and was of 7634 tons, built .in 1910. Tho Potaro belonged to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, of Belfast. She was of 4419 tons, and was built in 1904.] ■ • ■r Some time ago it was reported that the Karlsruhe had been /sunk in action off Grenada. A few days later Berlin announced that in the previous fortnight she had made a number of captures. By an American mail recently to hand a full and circumstantial story comes from Grenada, via Montreal, in which it is declared that after a battle between the Karlsruhe and another ship a lifebuoy was picked up ashore marked S.M.S. Karlsruhe, together with barrels of foodstuff and other wreckage, and that' fishermen had brought in tho nows that thev had seen dead bodies (bating about and other signs denoting that the Karlsruhe had gone to the bottom. An eye-witness further declared that he had witnessed the battle, that m ore than two warships took part, and that it-lasted from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m., and was fought at a range of from 4 to 6 miles. The story of the sinking of the Karlsmhe has not been confirmed by the British Admiralty. This may be accounted for, it is suggested, by the desire of the authorities to deal with other yessels known to have been working in' concert with the Karlsruhe. ' ,
NOT THE KARLSRUHE, BUT THE KRONPRINZ *WILHELM. (Reo. February 22, 8.40 p.m.) • London, February 22. The armed liner Krotprinz Wilhelm "Bank the vessels and confiscated the Hemisphere's cargo.
