SCHOOL PICNICS
; The • teachers and scholars of St. James's Sunday School' held their ■: annual picnic at Miramar Park on Saturday. Favoured by a beautiful day, a large number of teachers and pupils went to the grounds, by three special cars. During the morning the children. were amuse'd by games and lollyscrambles. and" in the afternoon a sports' programme was gone through, and the -prizes- won were presented by Mrs. Shirer.' After tea, cheers were given for all those who had helped to make.the outing a success, and it was a very tired but happy crowd that i boarded the cars for home.' It is estimated that 250 children and fifty adults were in the grounds during tho afternoon. . The teachers desire to express their thanks to ; tko owners of the park for the use of the, grounds, _ and also to thoso who, by their donations, mad© it possible to give the children, such a happy day o'iit. ■
The annual picnic of the Courtenay Place Congregational Church was held, at Belmont on Saturday, and was. attended by 170 members of tho church and Sunday School The weather was ideal, and tho outing was heartily enjoyed by all. . During the day refreshments were provided by the teachers, and many games wero played. A programme of sports . was also gone through, of which the results were as follows:—lnfants' 40yds- HandicapBoys: Bob Murray, 1; Charlton Reynolds. 2.- Girls :.Ena Brooks, 1; Win-' | nio Apps, 2. Potato' Race—Girls: Freda North, _1; Lila Murray, 2. 50yds., Handicap—Miss Crawford's Class David James, 1: Jack Murray, 2. Miss Henderson's Class: Priscilla Day, 1; Gladys Day, 2. Boys' Blindfold Race—Jack Hassell, 1; Jolui Bornholt, 2. 75yds. Race—Miss Hutehin's Class: Maude Burnett, 1; Katie Jeremsou, 2. Mr. Innis's Class: Jack Hassell, 1; William* Bornholt, 2. Ginger Beer and Bun Race —John Bornholt, 1 ; Bert Simons, 2. Egg-and-Spoon Race —Freda North, l'i; Winnie Gray, 2. Mr. Lennox's Class (75yds.).—Ken Hassell, 1; Henry Bornholt,' 2. Young Ladies' Open 50yds. Race —Miss Myrtle Lewis, 1; Miss Winnie Hunt, 2. Hopping Race (50yds.)—Percy Granger, 1; Jackie Lennox, 2. Sack Race —John Bornholt,, 1; lan .Murrell, 2. Ladies' Relay Race—Miss Winnie Hunt, 1; Miss Lizzie Gray, 2. Married Men's Walking Race (i-mito)—Mr. Tom Reynolds, 1; Sir. Thos. Archibald Cos, 2. A tug-of-war was held _ between the single men and the married men, and the latter were the winners. At the conclusion of the picnic prizes were presented by the' Rev. ;A. E. Hunt to the winners of the races.
The Maturawa School picnic was held on Saturdav, and proved very successful.' Mr. C. Jones (chairman), assisted by Mr. Gallon and Miss Merlet, kept the' children busy, and every child received a prize.' A number of adults were also present. • ' . '
