CITY HOTEL THEFT

• CHARGE AGAINST TWO YOUNG WOMEN. ' (By Teleerepii—Vieat AtsoclftUM,» Woodville,. February 19. Tito young womea were arrested here last night oil'a charge-of theft of £140 in Wellington. . ' In connection with the above charge, it appears that , the money was missed from a room at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel on Tuesday last. It is alleged that during the absence of tho adult occupants of _ the room—two members of the.Soho Trio, now. appearing at .' His Majesty's.Theatre—a visit was.paid to tho hotel b^'.,two. strangers, and a theory is that, ■ while one of them decbyed a child from the room on some trifling pretext; the ofiier committed the'theft. The money was kept in a box in the room, and was not. actually missed until tho following day, whereupon the police were informed. Inquiries by the polioe cast suspicion on two youiig women; who were reported to have been making efforts to obtain a motor to take them to Auckland. Thoy wero first' traced to Porirua, where, the car had broken down, then to Palmerston North/where they booked rooms, atthe Club i Hotel, and then to tho Woodvillo races,'where they wero arrested. . They were brought to Wellington last evening, and will appear before the Magistrate this -morning. It is understood that their property in custody, consists of quite a quantity of luggage. ■As the stolen money was mostly in now Commonwealth notes and 1 new Australian sovereigns, it is anticipated that so tie of it will be traced easily enough'.
