PHILOMEL IN ACTION

FIGHT BY LANDING TAHTY, News has been received by the Hon. J, Allen, Minister of Dsfence, that the casualties in the crew of H.M.S. Philomel, reported, a' few days ago, occurred when a landing party, from 'the ship came into- contact with a much greater force of the enemy. Mr. Allen informed "a reporter yesterday .that the message he had received stated that the men had behaved very well indeed.- The party had retired before the superior force under cover of the guns from the ship. All the wounded were doing well. The enemy's casualties-were at least 20 killed and more wounded. Mr. Allen would not say where the Philomel was • when the'fighting; occurred.
