MALTESE FIREMEN DESERTERS PROM STEAMER .. . -v WESTMEATH Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., presided over a sitting "of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. •Four natives of Malta, named Raymond Boldachin, Giovanni Florentin, Joseph Altard,. and Carmelo Farrigra, appeared to answer a charge that on February .10, at Auckland, being prohibited immigrants, they did unlawfully laud in Neiv Zealand. The circumstances connected with their appearance were unusual, in that they bad already appeared before the Magistrate in Auckland! and had been each sentenced to ione month's imprisonment deserting from the Westmeath, on which vessel they. were firemen. Before this term had expired they were brought on to Wellington, and the additional charge preferred against, them, so that they might not be at liberty until the Westmeath finally sails. Yesterday each of tho accused was ordered to pay costs 17s. Bd. and to be'detained in gaol'until the Westmeath sails.
Thomas Dagnall was .charged with a 6erious offence in respect t-o a child of three and a half years. He was defended by Mr. P. W. Jackson. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was committed to the Supreme-Court for trial. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50.
Edward Mohan was fined 405,, or fourteen days' imprisonment, on a charge 'of stealing twenty-three sacks, valued .at lis. 6d., the property of the State Coal. Company. ' Chief-Detective Boddam said that accused had been previously before the Court' 011 various charges, and had a partiality for stealing sacks. 4 John Galbraith was convicted arid ordered to pay medical expenses 17s. 6d., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, on a. charge of being found helplessly drunk. . Further charged with disobeying a maintenance order, the arrears of which totalled £38 .Bs. ho was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment. " For drunkenness, Ettie CP Toole was fined 55., or twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and Michael Allen fined 10s., or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Three first offenders were dealt with.
1 PETONE MAGISTRATE'S COURT. At the monthy sitting of tho Petone Magistrate's Court yesterday, ' before Mr. D. J. A. Cooper, S.M., a youth ■named Richard John Martin, who did not appear, was fined ss. for throwing a missile on the Potonc Drill Hall. Alfred Parkin and William Willoughby were jointly charged with threatening behaviour in Buick Street, whereby a broach of tho peace was occasioned. They wore fined 10s. each, with costs.; For riding a motor cyclo without a. light, Francis Waliaco was convictcd and discharged. Geo. Arthur Tegg, . for procuring liquor during tho currency of a prohibition order, was lined 205., with costs 75., default being fixed at tlireo days ill gao'i. with the Defence Act, Lionel Hood was fined 10s., with 7s. costs, in\ default '18 hours' iniprisonment. Two lads, who appeared in the Potono Juvenile Court yesterday, chairged with damaging windows in one of the pumping stations of the Petone'i.Borough Counoil, were severely admonished by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., and discharged. ]
