'A Press Association telegram from iWoodville states that the fierce wind which blew yesterday afternoon' started bush fires in the Hall Block, above the Manawatu Gorge. _ The fires quickly spread, and last night the Gorge Domain' and both bridges were ill danger. ' The annual prize : giving in connection with the Jackson Street (Fetono) Methodist Church Sunday School was held last evening, Mr. H. Hurrell (superintendent) presiding. An address was delivered by the Rev. J. .J. Lewis, and the prizes' won during the year were presented' by the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. H. M'Ewan). A children's choir under Mr. Maud rendered selections during the evening, Miss Maud officiating as organist.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company hold, a stock sale at Levin on Friday next. Messrs. Walter Colon, Ltd., 108, 110, and 112 Cuba Street, will be' closed between 1 and 2 p.m. to-day, the lunch hour.
