"FAVOURABLE DAY ON WHOLE FRONT"
SEVERAL TRENCHES CARRIED \ RESULT OF SEVERAL DAYS FIGHTING v . ' Paris, February 17. Official. — It has been a favourable day on the whole front. The 'British mastered the enemy in numbers of trenches south of Ypres, where- there has been serious fighting for several days. "We have captured three kilometres (about two miles) of trenches at Perthes and Beausejour (on the Aisne front), taking several hundred prisoners. "We have carried several blockhouses north-west of Pont-a-Monsson." The High Commissioner reports as follows to the Prime Minister (London, February 16, 5.45 p.m.):— "Paris reports; The British troops on Monday recaptured two sections of a trench lost on Sunday between Saint Efoi and the Ypres Canal. Particularly important successes by the French artillery are confirmed." m . , London, February 17, 2.55 a.m. "Paris reports that the operations on the whole front on February 16 were favourable to the Allies. Between the Oise and the Aisne, near Debailly their fire was very effective on an assemblage of automobiles. We have made progress ill the Reims section, near Loivre. On the Champagne front, extending from north-west of Perthes to north of Beausejour, we have captured three kilometres of German trenches, and taken several hundred prisoners. Northwest of Pont-a-Mousson the Allies carried several of the enemy's blockhouses in the Le Petre Forest."
