•from Our Special OorresDondent.l The Hutt Valley Homing Pigeon Society flew a race from Palmerston North last week, the birds being liberated in exceedingly rough weather. The results. were Messrs. Whitehead 7 and Booth's Keystone, time, 3hr. 13min. 46sec., 1.; G. D. and 0. Abrahall's The Weed, time, 4hr. 21mih. 2osec., 2; R. Booth's Sunbird, time, • 4hr. 23min. 20ec., 3. The next race will be flown from Wanganui. ! On Saturday the annual harbour excursion of the Heretaunga Boating Club took place, and about 800 attended, m spite of a somewhat choppy sea. ' The Duchess took the excursionists to the principal bays. Afternoon tea was provided on board, and after, a pleasant two hours' trip, the party returned to Petone.
Mr. H. Baldwin (chairman) and Messrs. W. Knight and M. Welch, of tho Hutfc River Board, made the annual ' inspection of the Hutfc River on Saturday. The protective works were found to be in good order, and certain necessary improvements were taken note of, and will be attended to. At a recent meeting of the Wellington branch of the Amalgaamted Society of Railway Servants, held at St. Augustine Hall, Petone, the following resolution was unanimously carried:—"That as the farmers, millers, wholesale merchants, and others have raised the price of commodities, and the Government has failed to prevent the exploiting of the workers, we therefore urge upon the. executive council to use every endeavour to secure an increase, of pay to all railway workers. Mr. L. A. Johnston, evangelist, of Palmerston, commenced an eight days' mission on 'Sunday, at the Lower Hutt Church of Christ. Addresses are to be delivered oil "The Scriptures in Relation to tho Present Crisis." In all probability, Mr. Johnston will conduct a similar mission at Petone. The anniversary services in connection with the Petone Jackson Street Methodist Sunday School wore celebrated on Sunday. In the morning the Rev. J. G. Gibson conducted, in the afternoon the Rev. P. J. Cossum, and in the evening the Rev. J. J. Lewis. ' There were good attendances on each occasion, a feature being the singing of a children's choir. On Wednesday next the prizes won during the year will bfc .presented by the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan). , . A sale of work is being organised, by the parishioners of St. James's .Church at Lotver Hutt, the proceeds of which are to be used towards extinguishing tho debt upon St. James's Hall;
