CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A meeting of the Council of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt (vice-president) took _ the chair, in the absence of the president (Mr. C. M. Luke). A resolution of condolence with Mr. C. M. Luke on the death of his brother (Mr. George Luke) was carried on the chairman's motion. It was decided to renew the request to the Prime, Minister for an interview re bills of lading, shipping chafges, and the-supplying of foodstuffs to neutral countries. . Reference was made by the chairman to the promised survey of the Waira-rapa deviation. This announcement by the / Government would, he believed, be accepted as very good -news. He hoped there would be no delay on this occasion, but that the Government would go right ahoad with the project. Ho thought the Chamber could claim to be partly responsible for this decision of the Government. He hoped the. committee set up by the Local Bodies' Conference would keep a watchful eye on the progress of the survey, to prevent another blunder being mado in the choice of the route. The council resolved to support, the proposal that the Government should set up a permanent Board of Trade iu New Zealand. . Two new members were elected.
