ORCHESTRA FOR WELLINGTON

OLD SOCIETY TO BE RESUSCITATED. For more years than one cares to re. member, the Wellington Orchestral; Society has been moribund. It might j have died and been decently interred, but for the fact that it possesses an estate of considerable value in the form of a library of music that many a thriving institution might envy. As far a3 one can see, this library is the sole justification for the existence of the Orchestral Society, which in years gone [by, under Messrs. Robert Parker, Matighan Barnett, and Alfred Hill, did good work. There are those who believe that the present is a splendid time to consider the question of galvanising the society into life, an:l the fact that the sorvices of Sir. Bernard F. Page' (City Organist) are believed to be available as conductor, has animated those interested with a. desiro to take definite action, and a public meeting is to be held in Bethune's rooms, Featherston Street, on Wednesday evening of next week to discuss the proposal. Lovers of orchestral music in Wellington have for a long time deplored the fact that there is no orchestra worthy of the name available for week-night concerts. The Municipal Orchestra, with all its drawbacks, gave some very enjoyable concerts. Indeed, the public hardly know how good they were until the end came, and the guarantors were called upon by the City Council to make good their promises. With a fair amount of encouragement from the City and tho citizens, the Wellington Orchestral Society should have a reasonable chance of a' prosperous existence. The promises ol suppcvi received already arc very encouraging- Anyone interested in tho project should communicate with the secretary, Mr. W. Prousa, ol Hozcard grouse, architects.
