FRENCHMAN'S BRILLIANT EXPLOIT RUSSIA'S GREAT TASK TACTICAL 10YE 1 EAST PRUSSIA THE . BLOCKADE THREAT PROTESTS FROM ITALY AND ' THE UNITED STATES
Daring exploits by French and Belgian airmen, with further mention of the great raid on the Belgian coast towns by the British . air fleet, are an absorbing feature of the war news to-day. There is scanty news from the Western theatre. In the Eastern theatre, Russia is steadily grappling with her colossal task; her line in East Prussia is retiring in good order to the fortified line, before great German forces; fighting in the Carpathians continues, witli advantago : to the Russians, while in Bukowina the operations are well in hand. There are no fresh developments in Egypt. Trouble is brewing in Tripoli, where a rebellion, fostered by German intrigue and the Turkish Jehad ("Holy War") Proclamation, has broken out against the Italian Administration. Italy has lodged a strong protest against Germany's threatened ' reprisals' on neutral shipping, and the United States' Note to Germany on the same' subject is said to have caused some embarrassment in Berlin; an apologetio reply is under consideration. The English sporting and outdoor journal, "The Field," has published a ghastly recital of German atrocities in Belgium, from the pen of King Albert's physician, who has investigated cases of almost unspeakable brutality.
