The "Vorwaerts," the central organ of the German Socialist party, and the only newspaper in Germany which has preserved a fearless and independent attitude towards the war, has made an interesting discovery. It has published the numbers of members ,of English trade unions who have recruited since the war began. The list, it says, is very interesting, and Germans would do well to study it. ' The Socialist organ remarks that many people will be surprised to learn, on comparing the statistics available in both countries, that_ the percentage of organised workers in the army at the front is far greater in the case of England than in that of Germany . It adds that "if Germany should in future bo tempted to speak with contempt about 'English mercenaries' it would De advisable that they remembered this fact."
