NATIONAL RESERVE.
The Lower. Hult Council Chambers were filled to overflowing 011 Friday, when tho first meeting of tho local branch, of the National Reserve was held. The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presided,. and was subsequently elected chairman of the branch, and Mr. R. B. Bell secretary. An executive committee, consisting of Messrs.- T. M. Wilford, M.P., P. Hally, and H. E. Leighton. was appointed to act in conjunction with the chairman and secretary. Mr. Bakhrtii intimated that it would be necossary to appoint a drill instructor, and in this connection Sergeant-Major "Wiecliern had offered his services. In the. course of a brief address, SergantMajor Wiecliern stated that it would be necessary to appoint drill instructors from the ranks of the reserve, to act in conjunction- with himself. He added that he would do his utmost to obtain sufficient rifles for the members, and he believed the Hutt Drill Hall would be available-for practices. After some discussion it was agreed to make Thursday the drill night in each week, commencing February 18. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Sergeant-Major Wiecliern for his offer, the audience rising and singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."' It was decided that the annual subscription should be 3s. The chairman announced that notice boards were erected at the Hutt and Alicetown Fire Stations, and at Mr. Gwilliam's premises at Taita, whereupon business pertaining to the reserve, meetings, etc., woxild be written. A vote of thanks to the Mayor for the energy ho had displayed in the movement and for services rendered was carried witli acclamation.
