An Australian mail only will arrive in Auckland by the Huddart-Parker steamer Riverina from Sydney this morning. The southern portion of the mail will arrive at Wellington by tomorrow morning's Main Trunk express.
Two men who are alleged to be deserters from the ship Cordobes were arrested in Wellington on Saturday by Detectives Mason and Tricklebank.
Sir Walter Buchanan has been advised that Government surveyors will' make a start this week on the survey of the best route for the Rimutaka deviation (says our Ma6terton correspondent).
Battalion orders juofc issued notify that all rifles, bayonets, water-bottles, pull-throughs, and sight-protectors on issue to companies of the sth (Wellington) Regiment ire to be returned to Q.M.S. stores on or before February 20 for inspection by tho Armourer-Ser-geant. Rifles will be reissued at an early date.
During the farewell to the. Napier Squad of the Fifth Reinforcements on Saturday night, Lieutenant-Colonel Hislop appealed to the young men of Napier, and particularly those present, to come forward and offer their Bervioes for King and country. This squad includes many footballers, including Downing, who received a remarkably enthusiastic send-off. About 110 men from Napier, Gisborne, and Wairoa leave Napier by the mail train to-day for Trentham.
A fire at the municipal power-louse at 8 o'clock on Saturday night plunged tile town of Gisborne in darkness, many of the largest shops having recourse to candle 6, while the picture theatres were unable to show. An hour later temporary repairs enabled the lights to be switched on again, and permanent repairs were effected' this morning. Tho damage is riot very heavy, and'is covered by insurance m the South British Office. —Press Association.
A chopping match that took place at Gisborue on Friday afternoon between P. Wilson (as Tasmania) and J. Ainos (of New Zealand) for a purse of £200 was the biggest competition of the kind that has been held ill New Zealand. Considerable interest was taken, in the event, and the contestants gave a fine exhibition. A' 15in. standing white pine block was used. F. Wilson chopped in splendid style, and an easy winner, completing his task in lmin. 7 3-ssec.
The largest and most representative deputation that ever waited upon any Minister of the Crown in RotorulT S? terviewed the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, on Friday, when business men askod that excursion fares to Rotorua be issued by the ordinary express on the Auckland and Thames lines on Saturdays, available for return until tire following Friday; also that excursion tickets be issued on all North Island lines on one day in each month, available for a month. Mr. Herries "promised that he would give the proposal, or as nearly, similar a scheme as was practicable, a reasonable trial.
At tho Christchurch Magistrate's Court on Saturday (says a Press Association telegram), R. T. Leathern, solicitor, was sued by a clerk for wa»es, on a judgment summons. Ho said lie was only making 10s. a week lately. The Magistrate said that this was a serious matter, and should go before the Law Society. Counsel said that,- Leathern was coming before tho society on another matter. The case was adjourned.
On the Newtown bowling green on Saturday, at the finish of tho games, Mr. F. Tonn«nd submitted to auction a set of bowls presented for the purpose by Mr., Honry Sexton, for the benefit of the Servian Relief Fund. Notwithstanding tho absence of the majority of members, the sum of £12 was raised by their sale and re-salo. ' The various purchasers were: Messrs F. A. Laws, £2; J. Remington, £1 55.; W. Arm-strong,-£1 55.; S. H. Underwood, £1; H.Raiisou, £1; T. Bland, £1; G. Prince, £1; W. Wylie, £1; 0. B. Norwood, £1; 11. Blenkinsop, 10s.; F. Townsend, 10s.; J. Flyger, 10s. Mr. Flyger intends to resubmit his purchase for auction at a later date. Mr. _ Townsend and Mr. Sexton were heartily cheered for their effort and its sucocss.
The employees of the firm of Messrs. J. Duthie and Co., Ltd., held their annual picnic at the residence of the Hon. J. Dufcliie, Nai Nai, Lower Hutt, on Saturday. The outing was well attended, and a most enjoyaole day was spent.
An elderly woman had a rather thrilling experience in Queen Street. Auckland, on Saturday afternoon \states the Auckland "Star"). She was engaged in cleaning out offices in Palmerston Buildings, on xho corner of Queen and Customs Streets. In some way she became locked in one pf the rooms, and as there waß no prospect of being released she decided to attempt an escape first by the window, and then along a narrow ledge, to an adjoining window. "I've seen tho office boys do it before," declared the old dame subsequently, "and I thought I could do it, too." Once on the ledge outside she probably lost hor nerve and her balance. At any rate sho fell. Fortunately beneath her was a shop verandah, and between lier and the verandah half a dozen telephone wires. She fell amongst tho wires, and broko them. They saved her to sonio extent, hut she landed on the verandah without broken lim'l3, much to the astonishment of those who witnessed the accident. For a while she appeared a good deal shaken, but later she was able to ■ CO oa with ler work.
. The Remount Officer at Trenthain, under instructions from Colonel Reakes, will exhibit a typical artillery horse at thp Mastorton Show this week.
Mr. Claude Donnelly, of Porangahau,, who has volunteered for the front has, (says our Napier correspondent) been presented by his uncle, Mr. G. P. Donnelly, with the horse Utopia as a mount.
Plans have been prepared for the erection of a new residential club for the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association.
In the Town Hall this evening, Mr. Meredith Atkinson (secretary of tie Australian Workers' Educational Association) will lecture on "The Industrial •Revolution."
