Preliminary arrangements have been made for the organisation of a new unit to be attached -to tlie New Zealand Expeditionaiy Force—a company of field The officer appointed to ,the command/ of the new unit is LieutenantColonel, G. Barclay, V.D., Officer Commanding the North Island Railway Battalion, New Zealand Engineers. He returned from Wellington yesterday afternoon, Laving been' summoned to headquarters to receive the appointment. Lieutenant-Colonel Barclay has been for many years actively associated with the' Volunteer and Territorial systems. He was officer in command of the Ihiitedin.' Field Engineers for about eight years, and when the Territorial system was inaugurated was given the first command of the 16fh Waikato Infantry Regiment, but upon the formation of the Railway Battalion of Engineers Lieuten. ant-Colonel Barclay was transferred to thsafc branch of the service, receiving his appointment to the command of the North Island Battalion in 1911. He has been a member of the railway service for over 30 years, and was recently promoted from tlio position of traffic clerk ■to that of goods agent at Auckland. ; He will leave for the south to-morrow evening to conduct an instructional camp at Turakina for officers and senior non-commissioned officers of the North Island Battalion, aiid after a short visit to Auckland will return to Wellington, probably at the beginning of _ next month, to organise the Field Engineers. The other officers already appointed from the Railway Engineers to the Field Company , are Captain A. Beekm'an, of Dunedin, and Lieutenant F. C. Wilson, of Auckland.
