AN EVENTFUL VOYAGE

■CARTERTON TROOPER'S IN- , TERESTING LETTER. ''To say that we have had an eventful voyage would be. putting things very mildly,'! writes a 'Carterton trooper who went with the main body of New Zealand troops, to a friend in Palmerston North. "Shortly after leaving Albany we ran across the Emden, but, of oourse, by this time you will all know the fate of 'this ship. We take a little credit for the capture of this ship ori ourselves, as our boat, the Arawa, was the first to get the wireless message ("5.0.5.") from Ccoos Island. We immediately passed the message on to the Sydney, one of our escort, and in two hours after our receiving the message the Emden had ceased to exist, so yon may guess that we were pretty close to her. Before leaving Colombo we took on board the German prisoners from the Sydney, all that remained of the Emden. We/brought the prisoners on with us to Aden, and there transhipped them to another warship. "We oarnu through the bucz Canal cleared tor action, and slept under arms all night. The Canal is so narrow that you could quite easily throw a stono on to either bank from the ship, and ae' wo have Turkish Arabia on one side you will understand the need for caution. However, wo came through safely, although the Indian troops who came through before us had a few men killed from stray shots from tho bank. Of course, both sides of the Canal are absolutely lined with Indian troops just now; it is pretty well guarded. "They say that we will be fighting inside a month (the letter is dated December 10, 1914) t and as troops are pouring in every day it looks as though wa wero going to something at' last."
