NOTES AND COMMENTS
rßr Glßncoi.T . Acceptances for the Woodville Meeting close with Secretary E. J. Gothard to-night. Acceptances for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting are due to-mor-row night. Nominations for the Nelson Jockey Club's annual meeting close on Monday. The Taranaki Meeting will be concluded to-day.' The principal event to be decided is the First Taranaki Stakes, in which Emperador and Merry Roe will meet for the first time this season. Phosphorus, who won the Taranaki Cup yesterday, has performed well at different times this season, but he is hardly reliable, and has failed repeatedly when well fancied by his connections. The Poverty Bay Turf Club's Summer Meeting will commence to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Mr. M. C. O'Connell, of Masterton, has registered "brown body, sleeves, rose hoops and cap" as his racing livery. Tho two-year-old Au6tralian-bred colt Two Lights' will carry these colours in the autumn, Toa Tere is now trained by A. Hall at Wanganui. During the Egmont Meeting Mr. G. F. Moore purchased the brood uiare Largesse, while the Clanranald mare ' Gallantry was secured by Mr. H. E. Good. The withdrawal of Wisebird from tho Flying Handicap at Taranaki yesterday suggests that she is being reserved for the Stakes to-day, and as Emperador and Merry Roe have both earned penalties the Ohokebore filly, who will have a big pull in the weights, and must be accounted very hard to' boat. Despite the fact that the fields were small at New Plymouth yesterday, tho results were ail against devotees of the totalisator. Very warm favourites in Play Off, Emperador, Avon Park, and Te Hou Hou got beaten and, generally speaking, backers had a bad day. The Hawera horses • Tree Lucerne and Patronymic, who scored at the Egmont Meeting last week, were again successful at New Plymouth yesterday. The latter 6cored in a hack race iat the same meeting last year. ' Last year there were only four runners in tho First Welter at the Taranaki Meeting, but this year that number was reduced by one. F. D. Jones, who has occupied tho position of private trainer to Mr. W. E. Bidwill during the past twelve months,, has severed lus connection with Rototawai Lodge. -It is probable that he will settle at liiccarton. Goldsize, runner-up to Phosphorus in the TaranaM Oup yesterday, won that event last year from Emperador, who wa6 conceding him two stone. Emperador met him on 161b. better terms yesterday, but' the Auckland horse again accounted for the Canterbury representative. De Gama figures amongst, the first acceptances for the Australian Cup, but he has been taken out of the Newmarket Handicap. The chestnut could not begin fast enough to have a chance in such company as fie will meet in the big 6ix furlongs, • but the class in the long-dis-tance race is nothing like that which used to contest that event, and there are no La Carabines, San Frans, Wakefula, or Merloolas about at the present time. A feature of this year's race is that the throe favourites, De Gama, Sir Solo, and Hoonbria all belong to the Dominion. FIXTURES. Feb. 10 and I.l—Taranaki J.C. Autumn. Feb. 11 and 13.—Poverty Bay T.C. Summer. Feb. 17, 18, and 20.-Dunedin. J.C. Autumn. Feb. 19 and 20.—South Auckland B.C. AnnuaL March 12 and 13.—Napier Park E.C. Autumn.
