SPORTS WAIROA
A SUCCESSFUL RACING CLUB. The sport of horse racing has held sway in. the Wairoa district for many, . years hack, and one of the most successful country clubs is the Wairoa County Racing Club. It is interesting to state that the Wairoa County Jockey, Clnb held races on Boxing Day, 1878— over 37 years ago. The only value recorded was for the County Stakes, worth £40. Prior to that many Maoa race meetings were recorded, and historical records show that the notorious Te Kooti Rikirangi held an impromptu ! meeting on "the sacred beach of Muahu,"atTeOnepotb, Waikaremoana. Tho horses that took part were those which the rebel chief had taken from the settlers at Mohaka, where the massacre of tbe inhabitants took place on April 10, 1869. The Wairoa County' Racing Club now has an annual two days' meeting, held during Carnival; Week; on' their pretty course, within close distance to the towu._ The; meet-- • ing, apart from the carnival, is the great attraction of the year to the country people, while visitors also at- • tend from all parts of Hawkes Bay, Poverty Bay, and even as far south :aa," Wellington. The racing provided to very good,, and the substantial stakes offered owners never fail to provide a large entry.
